How does your country rank in the world?Using CIA Photius Ranking (http://www.photius.com/rankings/), click on LIST OF COUNTRIES tab (top, right-side). Then, select your country from the alphabetized list. On your country's fact page, look at the blue column on the left-hand side to find and click on COUNTRY RANKS. Read through the ranking information and choose 4 different topics to report on (for example telephones, exports, hospital beds, and female literacy).
Then, record the fields researched, your country's rank, and WHY YOU THINK THAT IS. (You are going to have to use what you know about your country thus far to make an educated guess.)
FOR EXAMPLE: ARGENTINA
1. Internet users in Argentina are estimated 10 million people and ranked 27th in the world. I think Argentina is ranked 27th because it is geographically remote and establishing internet connections outside of major cities is very difficult.
2. Argentina is ranked 24th in roadways with 229,144 km. In addition to the geography limiting the amount of roads in Argentina, I think climate might affect the usefulness of a permanent road. Rain and flooding probably wash out roads. Additionally, due to the climate, the number of vehicles might be limited (warm weather) and people walk, ride animals, or bikes.
3. Argentina produces 745,000 barrels per day ranking 26th in world oil production. The countries producing more oil than Argentina are the typical large oil producers and Argentina would have to have vast oil reserves to keep up with the production of countries like Kuwait.
4. Argentina is ranked 135th in world infant mortality rate. That means per there are approximately 14 infant deaths for every 1,000 live births in Argentina. Other countries ranking higher on the list are undeveloped or developing countries that do not have the resources for supporting infant lives. Argentina must have hospitals and trained medical staff to keep the infant mortality rate low.

2 - They have 4,880,000,000 in external debt which puts them at 119 in the world. I think this is because they dont have many partners of trading and are a very small country.
3 - They are 17 in the world of people being below poverty line so that means they have a lot of debt but there people are still making money that they are above the poverty line and they might eventually have to cut back on paying their people.

ReplyDelete1. I decided to start out with something that caught my eye. Poland is ranked 16th in the world in hospital bed density. Which, most likely, means that the country is old, or they fight alot in war, many injuries, etc.
2. My countries literacy rate is near the best of the world. Poland is ranked 23rd total in the world for literacy rate, at 99.5 %.

ReplyDelete1. The female and male Literacy combined takes Greenland to 5th on the charts of countries for people who can read and write. That must mean that they spend some time working with children or adults with reading and writing because that's pretty good.

I think that they must really need money to have people properly cared for and that's why taxes might be raised more often than not. I feel like they use that money for good but I guess I would have to ask people that are actually in Greenland.

4) Uganda has 46 total airports. Ranked #95. Uganda probably doesn't have so many airports because they don't really need a bunch of airports.

Cell phones in Belgium are ranked 62 in the world. I think this is because a lot of people have home phones so they don't need a cell phone. I also think that this could be because there is little cell towers, and it is hard to get reception.
Infant mortality is rated at 193. I think this is because they don't have a lot of the medical supplies they need to care for infants. It could also be because they don't have clean hospitals, and people keep passing around sickness's.
Airports in Belgium is ranked at 99th in the world. I think this is because many people don't use airports. They can use trains, cars, or ride bikes to places, to get were they need to go.

3. Internet Hosts - Total of 3,748,000 internet hosts in Portugal. Ranked 28 in 2012. I think they are pretty high up on the list is because they are a well developed country and they have lots of people there so they need lots of internet service.
4. Total area - Total area is 92,090 sq km. Ranked 111. I think they are ranked at 111 because they are a smaller country and there are a lot of countries that are way bigger than it.
DENMARK
ReplyDelete1. Denmark gets 34% of it's electricity from renewable sources. That is #1 among all countries. This can include wind, waves, solar, and geothermal energy.
2. The school life expectancy for females is 18 years old. They are 7th in the world in that category. That means most females stay in school until they are seniors in high school or just graduated.
3. The people in Denmark that die from HIV and AIDS per year is about 100. That ranks 133rd in the world.
4. In Denmark, about 11% of people are obese. They are 51st out of the world.
Taiwan
ReplyDelete1. The infant mortality rank on Taiwan is 186 and its rate is 5 infant deaths every 1,000 live births. I think it's this way because Taiwan is a healthy country and they have healthy babies.
2. The literacy rank of Taiwan is 82. I think it's because that Taiwan is a country to learn but not everyone is on the boat at the learning process.
3. Taiwan's rank for exports is 22. I think it's because that they are big in making things and have a lot of jobs.
4. The rank of Taiwan for population below the poverty line is 157 with 1.16% in poverty. Taiwan is a big manufacturing country and have lots of jobs to keep people above the line.

Cellular Phones- There are 369, 969 cell phone users in Iceland placing it rank 172, This is a very high rank so the amount of people using cellular devices are little, I think this is because they are so isolated and far up north they don't have quite the right climate for good connection.
2. Unemployment- The unemployment rate is at 5.60% thus ranking them at rank 147, having a low unemployment rate is great for a country, I believe they have such a low rank because there job very in many places, also the small amount of people who actually live in Iceland.
3. Fossil Fuel Electricity- The amount of electricity they use with fossil fuel are very little with a percent of 4.7% ranking them at 200, this also means the power they use comes from other resources I think they do this because they use whats available to them.
4. Merchant Marine- Merchant marine ships are the amount of ships they have for exporting and importing, right now the amount of ships is 2 ships, putting them at 146 in ranking, I think they have so little amount of ships is because they don't have very high amount of exporting.
Bahrain
ReplyDelete1.Their average life expectancy is right at 78.29 years of age, which is ranked #53 in 2012. I think that they probably have good education for becoming a doctor and they have good doctors because that is a pretty high margine.
2.They have a staggering low at only 4 airports, they are #190. This is most likely because this is a third world country that does not make a lot of money in a year after taxes.
3.They have 94.6% of their population now how to read and wright. They are #94. This is probably because of the education and the work ethic of the students.
4.Internet users are estimated around 419,500 and are ranked #122. This is right about half of the population. This is considerably low compared to us. I think it is an okay thing because most people this is all they do.

I think that they are 38th, because they have lots of smart people. They most likely have lots of good teachers and schools.

I think they are ranked 105th, because they are all too smart to be on phones. They have better things to do with their time. Such as, play sports, hang out with friends, do their jobs.
Internet Users - ranked 67 in 2009
They are on the internet at work, sometimes. The kids are probably on it when they get home from school. Lots of people need internet for their jobs, so if they have to work at home at night they will be on the internet, too.
