8th Grade Iowa Biographies

  1. HON. WILLIAM G. THOMPSON

    He was a lawyer who dedicated his time to private concern and national importance. He has been depended upon to help with the best and permanent interests of the whole people and is a recognized power . He stands as the protector of the rights and liberties. Such a one is Hon. William G. Thompson, of Marion, who once was serving as judge of the eighteenth judicial district of Iowa.

  2. Mr. Porter W. Earl,
    He built the first brick house in Ceader Rapids, on the north west corner of first ave and second street. He had manufactured the brick. He was one off the first to live in Marion and Ceader Rapids.

  3. Henry E. Mason
    Henry was born in Virginia. He bought land in Ohio, but eventually relocated to Linn county, Iowa. He became a sucessful farmer and he owned 240 acres. He served as alderman of Mount Vernon. He had three children. Henry and his wife Clara Sawyer both died in Ohio

  4. John Anderson,

    I am doing a report on John Anderson the head of City-stone and Sidewalk Company. He was born in Sweden in 1857 and came to America on May 27th. He worked on the northern railroad to make some money for home. He broke his leg while he was working and had to return to Cedar Rapids. When he returned he worked on making shoes for people. But then he started his own buisness and put down more sidewalks than anyone near this town. This is a summary of John Anderson and how he contributed by making sidewalks for people to be safe.

  5. Robert S. Oxley

    Robert bought a piece of land. As he bought more land from time to time he earned up to 375 1/2 acres of land. He was a very successful farmer! Mr. Oxley was a republican and served in township meetings. Robert has had a good education when he was a child, and existentially helped as the school director.

  6. The Person who researched is George A.Yeisley. He was from Pennsylvania and he was born in October 27, 1811. He moved to Ohio when he was 12 because his father followed farming to the death. He had 13 siblings 8 brothers 5 sisters. He was married to Nancy Deal and she died in April 15, 1896 in their old homestead. That is what I learned aboyt George A. Yeisliy

    Was one of the first settler in Cedar Rapids he had 2 or 3 children he also brought his elderly father and he has a wife he was also for charged for stealing horses from a neighboring state.

  8. JOSEPH I. BEATTY
    He was a owner of 200 acres of farmland, in Benton county. In politics he was a democrat. He settled down Margaret Gasser of benton county they were married on March of 1906. They had one child they named Archibald C.. Mr. Beatty had the most successful farm in Iowa. He never really took part in politics aside from voting. Other than that his wife had a membership in the Lutheran church where they have a huge circle of friends and acquaintances throughout the community.

  9. The person that i have found information about is William W. Reece. William's father purchased 80 acres of land in Spring Grove township. Later on in life Henry, William's father purchased 30 acres of timber. This place is the Reece homestead. This is where Reece was born and spent the most of his life. After Henry passed away the land was passed down to William. This is all the interesting facts I found about William W. Reece.

  10. H.S. Hale

    Taking up residence in Mt. Vernon Mr. Hale was engaged in a lumber and grain business for three years, and later started contracting and painting. He purchased 6 acres of land in the heart of Mt. Vernon and divided them into lots. Mr. Hale married Miss Abby Hill. They had 6 children together. All grew up to help the community and do wonderful things such as contracting and painting. Other members were volunteering in church, and Fourteenth New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Mr. Hale was reared a Whig and became a Republican of the organization of the party, casting the first presidential vote for John C. Fremont.

  11. Charles C. Cook:
    Charles C. Cook was one of the earliest settlers of the country. He was six feet and one inch tall and had remarkable strength and endurance. He never favored himself and he saw the interests of the town and the general public. He was said to act honestly for the best of the community. He had little education, but still was very intelligent. All of the public businesses, schools, and churches found him a warm advocate and a ready helper. He took a very active part in the opening of the boulevard from Cedar Rapids to Marion. He raised a company during the time of war. Mr. Cook had a wife named Emily and four children; George, Henry, Kittie, and Charles. George died after he had enlisted in the regular army. During Mr. Cook's later years he became stricken with disease.

  12. The person I am researching is Henry Sailor he was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in December 6, 1830. When at the age of 16 he was wanted to be a brick builder and have his own shop.At the age of 18 he enlisted for the civil war in april 24,1861.His family was always moving because of his fathers job his family went all over pennsylvania,Philadelphia,Rhode island.He married amelia haves and was living in cedar rapids, iowa but she died in september 24,1912.

  13. JAMES ORVILLE DOWNING, D.D.S. was born on September 20, 1912. Dr. Downing was graduated from high school at Cantril, in 1930, he then attended Parsons College at Fairfield, for 2 years. For another 2 years, he was at Iowa State College of Agricultural and Mechanic arts, at Ames, and for a year after that he studied at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. In 1945 he graduated from the School of Dentistry at Saint Louis University, with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. In the next 18 months he was with the United States Navy, from which he emerged in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant. In the fall of the same year, Dr. Downing established a practice in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of the advisory board of the Linn County Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Cedar Rapids. His favorite pass times were fishing, hunting and golf. On December 21, 1942, Dr Downing married Mrs. Thelma Lappen.

  14. John Adams
    He arrived in Linn County on the 28th of November, 1864. He married Myra J.Gray on the 28th of November, 1865. He died in December, 1909. They had six children and 4 who are still alive. He was a devoted member of the Presbytarian Church.

  15. Martin Zlnkula.

    He is a successful farmer who was born in Austria. He attended public school in Iowa City, and then his they moved to a small farm. He got married and the moved to a another 70 acre farm. After 15 years he moved to a 123 acre farm in Linn County. He built a large barn; some outbuildings, and a great house. It was now one of the best farms in the area.

  16. Robert Smith was born in Marion county, Ohio. In the fall of 1854 he came to Iowa in a covered wagon. He traveled to over 40 counties in the state. He bought about 700 acres of land all over the state. In 1558 he came to Linn county. He always had a interested in education affairs and was a director in Franklin township for 21 years, and Linn township for 3 years.

  17. Louis J. Zika
    Was a well known contracter and builder of Cedar Rapids. Was four years old when brought to the states by his parents Jacob, and Anna Zika. Worked as a carpenter in Chicago until 1869, he then came to Cedar Rapids. He got married to Miss. Julia Lewis 1886. At the age of fourteen he learned the carpenter way following his fathers steps for three years.

  18. Henry S. Kohl was a very successful farmer and stock raiser. He was born in Cedar County, Iowa on May 22, 1853. Henry's family is originally from Pennsylvania but moved to Lisbon, Iowa. For many years Henry Kohl's father was a active and important agriculturist of his time, over the years Henry Kohl followed in his fathers foot steps. After marriage Mr. Kohl leased a farm he had owned and operated for three years, and bought land in linn county, on this new land he raises horses, cattle, and hogs.

  19. I found Ed Leclere from Central City, Iowa. He had always lived in Linn County, but has moved around a lot. He attended high school in Monticello, Iowa, and went to college at the Cedar Rapids Business College. He worked at two banks, one in Coggon, and one in Central City. In Coggon, he worked as a assistant cashier, and in Central City, he worked as a cashier at the State Bank of Central City. In 1901, he married May L. Savage. They had three children together.

  20. Washington Benjamin Carpenter,

    Carpenter was born in Delaware country, New York. Washington B. Carpenter is one of 13 children, but him and his brother are the only ones that survive. He really loves to farm. He is the proud owner of a valuable and productive farm that's four hundred and eighty-five acres. He also has a record of raising the finest steer ever produced in the state. It weighing 3,600 pounds, when it was only 4 years old.

  21. Edward M. Crow

    Mr. Crow was born in Paoli county in Indiana on June 4, 1816. In 1860 he moved to Anamosa, Iowa when he married his 3rd wife, Sarah A. Green. He had an interest in welfare and help the growth and development of Linn county. He was one of Linn county's first settlers and one of its most highly esteemed citizens. Mr. Crow died on November 3, 1872.

  22. R.D. Taylor

    Mr. Taylor was a successful business man in Cedar Rapids. He studied law at Minnesota University and graduated in 1893. Mr. Taylor is an earnest member of the First Presbyterian church. He married the daughter of the Rev, on June 26th 1895 to Miss Alfaretta Jenkins. The couple had three kids, two boys and one girl.

  23. There was a man named Mr. Porter W. Earl that one of our earliest settlers, coming to Marion in 1840, and the following year removing to cedar rapids as his permanent home.He was a man of unusual intelligence, and always dignified and gentlemanly in his deportment.e manufactured the brick and erected the first brick dwelling house in this city in 1849, on the northwest corner of First avenue and Second street.He also furnished the brick, for the three-story building erected by Judge Greene at the foot of First avenue, on the southwest corner, where the Greene Brothers, for many years, carried on their extensive mercantile business. This building was also erected in 1849. Mr. Earl and his wife were both members of the Methodist church. He died April 14, 1884.The oldest son, Merritt, died many years ago. Harriet, now the wife of Charles A. Taylor, lives in Peoria, Ill.; William resides in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Ella, now Mrs. J. Thomas Dalton, lives in Chicago, Ill.

  24. For 56 years James Monroe Bartleson identified with the buisness interests of Linn County. And he was actually left as a orphan. And then when his father died he was devistated and he knew that he would have to find a job to work for so he could pay off the money from when his father was alive and he did all of the work for the two of them together. And then in November 1855 he came to Marion,Iowa and started to live with his brother in-law and stayed with him for a while.

  25. Robert A. Wallace,
    Robert was born here in Cedar Rapids; he had 3 siblings. He became a well known contactar and builder, but first he was a timber cutter. He was married to Mary Barnes in 1835. He served two terms as Alderman of the third.He and his farther used stone to build there creations.

  26. Henry Sailor
    No one in Linn County stood higher in public esteem then Henry. Henry went to public school only until he was 16 then he enrolled in brick making for four years. He had a family of nine children. His mother's name was Margaret Bitter. My great great grandma's name. she also had a large family what would make my great grandpa who had recently died.

  27. D.G. Ziegenfus was a trader for over 48 years. What's really important about D.G. is because in the rebellion, he signed up for the army and served for four years. D.G. married a girl named Nancy, and had five children. Four of his kids died, but luckily one survived.

  28. William H. Lamson
    was a citizen of Marion who was carrying on a buisness of harness-making who came to Cedar Rapids at the age of 4 then moved to Marion and at the age of 16 learned the buisness of harness-making and became proficient at making collar making and carriage trimming. He was married and had all 3 children in
    Iowa with Miss Eva May Davis. Lamson was a Prohibitionist-Republican he was a great member of society taking part in a lot of events and groups. Lamson was part of a member of city concil from the second ward for 2 years, was a member of United Order of Ancient Templars, and also of the V.A.S. fraternity and of modern wood men. He established his own buisness in 1870 and was some of the finest work in the city. People came from far and near to get some of his goods of harnesses. HE was one of the finest buisness men and a participant in society.

  29. John Adams, Jr
    He was a resident in Cedar Rapids but was born in England 1851. He moved here with his wife who was also born in England. Him and his wife had a total of 6 Children. 2 children have died in infancy. It was 23d of November, 1909 that he had Past away and his wife opened a bread and milk depot No.915 south. Her business was ran by the family after sh passed away her oldest kid had started the business again.

  30. Clarence E. Hahn was born in Northampton county, Pennsylvania, March 19, 1858, and in 1862 came to Iowa with his parents, Amos and Henrietta (Barnes) Hahn, whose entire lives up to that time had been passed in the Keystone state. On the paternal side his ancestors came from Holland, but the Barnes family originally came from Scotland. On coming to this state Amos Hahn first located near Lisbon, in Franklin township, Linn county, where he purchased a farm of one hundred and sixty-five acres, making it his home throughout the remainder of his life. He died February 12, 1897, and his wife died December 20, 1896 both being buried in the Lisbon cemetery. They had five children: Sarah, now the wife of William Dixon, of Linn Grove, Clarence E., Frank, who married Hattie Leese, and is a carpenter and contractor of Mt. Vernon; Ella, wife of John Hoodmaker, who runs a dray and hack line in Mt. Vernon; and Philip, who married Ella Davis and is engaged in teaming in Mt. Vernon.

  31. John E. Atwood
    John was born in 1829 in England,late they sail crossed the ocean to New York, than later came to Linn county, Iowa. He bought land and improved buildings, he improved many buildings. John had 360 acres of land. John took great care of his land and the land was very good for crops. he had 5 children with one wife and 8 children with his second wife. John died in 1878. he was 78 when he died.

  32. John Anderson
    John was born in Sweden in 1857. He was a Cedar Rapids business man. He started out empty handed with no money at all. His business put down more miles of sidewalks than any other business, he also did work in constructing sewers and laying them out. On the 27th of May 1881 him and his wife moved to Hull, England, and from Liverpool to New York. For a short time Mr. Anderson worked on the Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Northern Railroad. He later went to Illinois and was employed in a stone quarry. John Anderson then broke his leg and returned back to Cedar Rapids and turned his attention to shoe making.

  33. George A. Yeisley
    Growing up Yeisley was a farm boy getting an average education at a nearby school house. He was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Ohio when he was twelve years old. When he was first earning a living on his own for two years he chopped wood but then he moved to Lynn County, Iowa, he was here for four years before buying sixty acres of land from the government to farm on. He was very good at his farming. Geroge married Nancy Deal while he was still in Ohio and they had ten kids together. He has served as supervisor of his township, and has filled all of the local offices, being school director in his district for a lot of years. George can look back on his life with no regrets.

  34. William K. Wild owned a more valuable farm in Linn county which contains 100 acres of rich farmland. He came to Iowa when he was around one years old. After finishing school he went to Jones County where he opened up a general store in the town of Cass where he work for the next five years. His business sold out so he moved to Delaware and he purchased a store there. After two years of owning it the store burned down and he moved to Linn County and purchased his farmland. He married Miss Lucy Day on the 15th of June, 1898. He gave effort towards the democracy and he followed his fathers footsteps.

  35. Willis A. McConkie, M. D.
    Dr. McConkie is a prominent connection with the medical profession in the Cedar Rapids area. He was connected with the medial profession for 22 years and he became a practitioner. He joined this profession with his father, continuing on the medical profession in his family. Willis became one of the best informed and most capable practitioner in the city of Cedar Rapids. Dr. McConkie takes and active and helpful interest in the welfare and growth of Cedar Rapids. Dr. McConkie went to the University of Michigan where he got into his medical degree and graduated in 1889.

    He was a scout for a revolutionary army. He was also leader of several Indian allies. He explored Illinois,Wisconsin,and most of Minnesota. Once he moved to Iowa he build farms and businesses. He found the town of Once Illinois.

  37. Marvin Wilsey
    He was born in New York on January 4th 1842. After leaving his parent house he worked in the lumber camps for a year and on the expiration of that period came to Linn county, Iowa. Where he bought forty acres of land in 1865 and kept expanding until he had 204 aces of rich productive land. He married Miss Calphurnia V. Rowley on February 7th 1865. Him and his wife are both are faithful members of the Methodist Episcopal church. They do as much as they can to promote its growth and extend its influence.

  38. Charles R Jordan

    Charles was born in Oswego,New York,October 24, 1853 and his parents are Patrick and Margaret Gallagher Jordan.Charles was married bu the died before his wife and she died in Cedar Rapids,and the were the parents of nine children, but sadly only two are living. Charles R. Jordan obtained his early education in a public school.While in school he worked for George Holcomb and after completing he's education he continued to work for him until 1875.he also farmed property in western Iowa. In december 1880 he married Miss Katherine Strawney then they became parents of three children whom one died in early childhood. he became manager of the depot eating house at Cedar Rapids.

  39. Thomas G. Armstrong
    He did much towards transforming Iowa's wild land into improved farms. He was one of the most extensive farmers in Benton county. He was among the first to introduce imported cattle. He was one of the founders of the bank at Atkins, Benton county, and served as its president until his death.He also stayed a farmer until his death. He married on the 4th of July 1861. He became the owner of seven hundred and sixty acres of valuable land. Mr. Armstrong's children are John C., George, William J., Hettie May, Newton A., Horace T., Mary J., Louis N., Minnie, Fred and Chester A.

  40. William J. Henderson-
    On February 13, 1868, Peter G. and Arabell Henderson gave birth to William J. Henderson. William is known as a successful agricultural agriculturist and stockman. He attended the common schools for education and stayed at home until he was about 20 years old. During the ten years, he lived on what is now known as the Charlie Carl Farm of about 240 acres. He gradually added on an additional 200 acres to breed Englishshire horses and thoroughbred red polled cattle. His live-stock interests have bought him an extensive acquaintance in Linn.

  41. Johnston Elliott, Jr.

    Was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio on February 21, 1842. He moved to Marion, Iowa on April 6, 1856, when he was 14 years old. For Iowa he started grocery stores for the towns people. He was a hard business man.

  42. Burt R. Day:

    Burt R. Day was a Massachusetts native, he was born 1835 but sometime at young age there family traveled by covered wagon to Appleton, Wisconsin. Where he had schooling in country schools and the city school. He began work on the farm at an early age but then left and headed of to Waterloo,IA to study book-binding. But he didn't like that after six months. So he turned to merchandising and employed to Cook-Lawrence Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1884 his pay was $5 dollars a week and he worked there for 26

  43. Peter A. Peterson
    Peter A. Peterson was born in Cedar Rapids and has been a resident since 1884. He was born in Germany on October 5th, 1847. His father died when he was 11 years old and his mother died having their thirteenth child when he was 32. He went to public school until he was 14. Then he became a captains boy aboard a ship. At the age of twenty he left the ocean services, and went to New York. After he traveled around the United States for awhile to Honolulu and St. Louis he became a seaman again. Eventually he ended up back at the lakes again and went to New Orleans and was a fireman at a sugar plantation. In February of 1871 he sailed to Cape town, Africa. He was married in Chicago in 1881 to Miss Antonie Vanis. Politically he is a prominent Democrat, but has never been an office seeker, and fraternally is a member of the subordinate lodge, encampment, Canton and Rebekah branches of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and takes an active part in their meetings. He is also connected with the Independent Order of Foresters, an insurance society. He gives very liberally for charitable purposes, and is always willing to advance the interests of the people of Cedar Rapids.

  44. Burgess Martin
    Burgess Martin was known for coming to America determined to settle his business in America. Burgess Martin earned a valuable farm of 86.5 acres in Marion township. Burgess was from England and he moved to America when he attained his majority. He was from another country and he knew what he wanted to do. His business was very successful and he will go down in history known for it.

  45. James Martin,
    James Martin had a wife and four children, Elmira, George, Lizzie, Nathanial H. James was employed at the flouring mills. He was very intelligent and showed a lot of integrity. His entire family were members of a Methodist church. His wife died on April 24, 1884. His daughter, Lizzie, passed away on October 22, 1889. Elmira then passed away on January 21, 1894. She was one of the purest Christian characters. This only left Nathaniel and George, who were then residents of the city.

  46. Andrew McKean
    In June 1838, in company with H.W. Gran and Alonzo Pratt, he traveled over Illinois and Iowa, and settled near Mt. Vernon. In 1854 he was elected Clerk of the District court, which he held until January, 1873- a period of 18 years. In December 1872, he purchased an interest in the only bookstore in Marion, the firm being McKean & Gibson, and has assisted in its management since then.

  47. John Nicholas Mathes
    Born in Germany, John Nicholas Mathes was an excellent farmer. But he was a miner and iron worker before he moved to Linn county in spring 1856 and became a farmer. After he moved to Linn county he bought a 180 acre farm where he spent seven years there. Then he bought a 280 acre farm where 80 acres were under cultivation. At both farms he made some of the best soil to grow stuff with. Then he sold that farm and moved to Marion in 1874 where he died.

  48. John Dougherty, born in the Emerald Isle in 1836. When he was 16 he got on a boat to New York. 5 years later he came to Lin County and got work as a foreman for railway construction. In 1867 he bought land in Jones County. 3 years later he had 9 kids. He lived the rest of his days in Lin County while still owning the land in Jones County for money.

  49. John Rogers
    He was a well-known retired farmer and prosperous of center point was born in guernsey county, Ohio, on the 19th of april, 1840, and is a sun of Samuel and Eliza (Cheedell) Rogers, natives of pennsylvania and Ohio, respectively. When he was a lad of eleven years old, he come with his family to Iowa and grew to manhood in Linn county, receiving but limited education advantages. He began life for himself by working as a farm hand by the mouth and was thus employed for several years. His first purchase of land consisted of a small tract of unbroken prairie , which he buit a log house, where he lived while fencing and improving his land. When he got older he got married in Linn county in February, 1862, the lady of his choice being Mrs. Elizabeth Meanor. Mr. Rogers got into politics and is in a Jeffersonian Democrat.

  50. William W. Reece
    William has had a great impact on Linn county agriculture. William W. took over their family farm when he was 21 and has improved it drastically by adding a new barn, a steel windmill, and a granary. Mr. Reece married Bessie E. Shaffer in July 1888 and had six children. Mr. Reece supports the Republican party and was involved in the school.

  51. Albert Moroni Secrist
    For many years he was a active and successful factor in the agricultural circles of Linn county as an extensive farmer and stock buyer. In 1909 he was honored by election to the presidency of the Old Settlers Association. His birth occurred in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, on 5th of August, 1849. He went to Cornell College in Mount Vernon Iowa for a teacher. He was married to Miss Georgiana Oxely, they got married on May 1885.

    Like many people that I found he was a carpenter. He moved to Cedar Rapids when there were only 300 or so people living there. Though he was only a carpenter for a short period of time once he moved to Cedar Rapids. He had been honored with many town ship offices and had man successful years.

  53. STEPHEN A. SHATTUCK

    Shattuck was a carpenter lick most people back then. he moved to ceder rapids when the population was around 400 he served as alderman of the city two years, township assessor one year, and township trustee three years. He has been a delegate to numerous conventions of his party,as alderman of the city two years, and has always taken a deep and commendable interest in public affairs. He was a member of Oak Lodge, He also was a township assessor one year. Shattuck got married to Miss Harriet Rice in 1856

    Samuel Johnson moved to Cedar Rapids with at least 300 or less living there. Like many people he was a carpenter.When he was in Cedar Rapids he was a carpenter for a short amount of time.He was honored from many town ship officers and had a lot of successful.

  55. Fred J. Rabe
    He was a leading stock raiser of the fayette township, he attended tilford academy at Vinton. He retired from active business and began a live-stock business. He raised cattle,hogs and other. He was recognized as one of the enterprising and progressive citizens of his native land.

  56. Christian Magnus

    Christian Magnus was born in Germany and remained there for his childhood. During his childhood he learned the brewing business from his father. In 1857 he moved to Twin springs, Winnesheik county, Iowa, where he started his first brewery for a Frenchman. After spending a short time in Chicago he moved to Cedar Rapids and worked in another brewery as head brewer for two years.
