Using the choice board below and All About The Gold Rush, pick three activities that are of interest to you. Then, read, research, compose, and post your findings on the blog by Friday, February 28 at 2:55 PM.
1. Figure
out how many steps it took for a 49er to walk to California. First, measure one of your normal steps from
front heel to back heel. How many inches is it? Next, divide 63360 (the
number of inches in a mile) by that number. Now you have figured the number
of steps in a mile. Now, multiply the number of steps by 2,000 miles--the
distance to California. The answer is the number of steps it would take for
you to walk from Missouri to California.
|
2. Before they left for California, the 49ers
plotted their route west. With a
modern map, plot YOUR route to Sacramento. Try to find the fastest route.
|
3. Sam Brannan was a "skilled
craftsman of hype" because he promoted the gold rush when no one else
seemed to care very much. Can you
think of events in modern life that are over-promoted or "hyped" by
the media?
Sam Brannan ran down the streets of
San Francisco and shouted to get people's attention; how do promoters get our attention today? Is hype good or bad?
|
4. Gold was a magnet that brought
people--dynamic, energetic people--from all over the world. This vibrant mix
quickly turned San Francisco into a cultural mecca, with theater, opera, and
more newspapers than any city but London. Based on your understanding of the world, what would you say makes
a city interesting and why? Then, name
your top three most interesting cities.
Explain.
|
5. If the gold rush had never happened, the
states of California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico might have ended up as
a part of in Mexico--instead of the U.S. How
would life in America be different? How would your life be different?
|
6. Many of the 49ers were teenagers who
left home on a 2,000 mile journey to California. Some walked the entire
distance on foot! If you were
planning to journey 2,000 miles across the wilderness, what would you take
along? Remember, there are no supply points along the way; you must pack
everything you need to last 3 months. Make a list of your supplies.
|
7. To understand what life was like for the
49ers, try going through an evening
without any modern conveniences. No electric lights, ball point pens, or TV
etc.. Make a complete list of all the things you gave up. (You might make an
exception for bathrooms!)
|
8. Imagine
that you are to travel back in time to become a 49er. You are allowed to take
along one modern invention; something that will fit in your pocket. What
would you take? Why?
|
9. Before the gold rush, a metal pan in
California cost 30 cents, but after gold was discovered, gold pans sold for
15 dollars. The price change was a result of the economic laws of supply and
demand. Can you think of items
today that are more expensive because they are in short supply? What about things that are inexpensive
because they are in large supply? Can you think of things that have gone up
in price as demand has increased or supply has dwindled?

1.) I would take 10,560,000 steps to walk from Missouri to California.
ReplyDelete4.) Something that makes a city interesting is the sights, the history of the city, and the people. You don't want to go to a city with bad, or mean people, and you don't want to get caught up somewhere where something bad will happen. Also, there has to be something to do in a city. It wouldn't be very fun if you traveled somewhere far away from your own home city and had nothing to do. I would like to see the history of the city because who knows, someone famous could've been something in that city. That is what makes a city interesting in my opinion.
Delete5.) If the Gold Rush of '49 didn't happen, the US would be different in many ways. One way is the population of states, or cities. People that live in Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and California today would be living in Mexico. This means that if people wanted to live in the US, they would have to move to different states, and the states would have a higher population in states. If there is more people in states, houses would have to be smaller so everybody has room to own their own land. Life would be different if the Gold Rush of '49 didn't occur.
Delete1. I would take 6,669,474 steps to get to Missouri to California.
ReplyDelete4.The things that makes a city is the sites you go to a place like Iowa and would just want to leave. If you to a place like New York City you would never want to leave because there is so much do.A lot of city's are are known for there sports team, you like a sports team or a lot of people go to the famous restaurants and they are really good.My top 3 cites are Washington D.C,New York, and California because of all the cites and the sports teams are the best to go see and the hotels are really cool to.
Delete6. The things I would bring is water because you need to stay hydrated. Food is another item because you need to have energy and keep going without giving up. Another thing is extra clothes because you don't know if it will be cold or hot and you will need to keep cold or warm. Another thing is a blanket when you stop for the night you will need something to lay down on because you might have to lay on rocks or concrete. The last thing I would bring is tools because if you get there and you cant dig up the gold you went 2000 miles for nothing.
Delete1. it would take me 8,448,000 steps for me to get from Missouri to California
ReplyDelete8.I would take a
8. Ipod so I could listen to music and have games. Also so I could be entertained when working. But before I went to the past I would install a solar panel in the Ipod so I could recharge
Delete8. Also I would have more fun with that so I didn't get board easier. So I could work more and find more riches hopefully. And I could get a GPS so I could find my way thorough the wilderness.
Delete7. I went the whole day yesterday without electronics after school. I gave up my 3 D.S.,T.V.,X-box 360, And Computer. What I did was talk to my cat for about one and a half hour then went to church for a puppet practice for about two hours. Then talked to my cat again for the rest of the night then went to sleep. Also I haven't used any electronics until now.
DeleteQuestion 5
ReplyDeleteLife in America would be very different if we didn't have New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California. FIrst off, I think we wouldn't be into surfing as much, I know California is really into surfing. We wouldn't have Las Vegas, no gambling, show girls, weddings that weren't suppose to happen, etc. Not having Las Vegas would actually be a good thing. California has Hollywood, the booming city of super stars! New Mexico is boring so it doesn't matter that much if it was gone. People could only go to the Pacific Ocean if they had a passport, or went to Japan. I guess if you really wanted to see it you could go to Washington, but no one really wants to go there, it's too rainy. It would make everything different, and I don't know what it'd be like exactly.
Having the New Mexico Territory and California not be a part of the United States would change my life completely. I wouldn't be an American citizen, I would be a citizen of Mexico. I would speak Spanish, I would have Spanish traditions, I would want to go to the US. People always want what they can't have. Currently I want to speak Spanish, I want to have Spanish traditions, (I have some, but I want to do more)
and i want to live in Mexico. I may not have as good as education as I have now, I could be traded as a slave, or I could be working on my family's farm my whole life. It sure would be an adventure compared to my life here.
Question 6
DeleteI would bring many items with me along my 3 month journey. I would bring flour to make bread, cows for milk and meat, seasonings such as salt, pepper and garlic. I would bring a weeks worth of clothes, I could re-wear clothes until they got dirty, then wash them. I would bring jarred food. I would bring toiletries, blankets and pillows. I would stay with my family the whole time. I would try to keep my loved ones safe and healthy. I would NOT eat them.
Question 8
DeleteIf I were to travel back in time to become a 49er I would bring nail polish on my journey. The reasons why I would bring nail polish is because it would be something fun and new. The 49ers would be very fascinated with it, and I can paint everyone's nails! Plus I could paint my nails along the trip so I wouldn't be as bored. That's why I would bring nail polish.
1. I would need to take 10,560,000 steps to walk from Missouri to California.
ReplyDelete9. Gasoline prices have increased because the supply is low. Gas is in higher demand and supply is still decreasing. Many people need gas and supply is decreasing, so that is why the prices continue to goes up. Many electronics are in large supply as demand decreases. These items go down in price, as there is still a large supply.
Delete6. If I were to travel 2,00 miles across the wilderness there are some things I would take with me. First i would take some warm clothes in case it gets cold on the trip. Next I would a 3 months supply of food. Also, a 3 months supply of water. I would also need a horse, for a way of transportation to arrive faster. Lastly, I would need different tools, in case they are needed upon arrival. These are the items I would bring if I traveled the 2,000 miles across the wilderness.
Delete1) It would take me 12,672 steps to walk to California.
ReplyDelete3) Some events that I think are over-promoted would be reality TV. Reality TV is pretty much all thats on these days and most of the time, the people on the shows are fake. For example The Kardashians. They are extremely over-promoted by media. My question is how did they even become famous? They have done absolutely nothing. You see them all over magazines, TV, and the radio. I think it's sad for some of the things that are being promoted these days.
#1: It would take me 4,087,741.8 steps to go the 2,000 mile journey from Missouri to California.
ReplyDelete#5: If the gold rush had never happened and the states of CA, NV, AZ, and NM were part of Mexico, life there would be much different than it would be in America. None of the cities in those states would be the way they are now. They would have had different specialties and different attractions. They would be more related to Mexican culture rather than American. One way my life would be different is the type of schooling. If I lived there, instead of learning about American history, we would be learning about Mexican history. There would probably be lots of differences between the classrooms in Mexican states compares to American states.
Delete#9: The biggest thing I think of for something that's expensive and in short supply is gas. The price in lots of places had continued to increase even more than people have expected. The supply of the gas is also continuing to go down. Lots of people use the gas for their cars mostly, so the gas stations have to keep supplying it for them. It is harder for the businesses to get the gas because it is in short supply and high demand. Since it is harder for the businesses to get the gas, they increase the price.
Delete#9 continued: Also the way people communicate would be different. Most everyone in those places would be speaking Spanish instead of American English. Instead of teenagers getting jobs, they might be working on their parents' farm. You might spend more time learning about the agriculture and how to run a business instead of going on to college.
Delete1. 9,747,680 steps to get to California.
ReplyDelete3. On thing I recently read about was Lebron James in high school. He was called "The Chosen One" and often called "The most hyped basketball player". He was very hyped because of his play on the court, but also got a lot of attention off the court. He was busted for accepting free gifts from a store clerk. He was also questioned about the Hummer his mom got him for his birthday. These are some reasons why Lebron was a over hyped basketball player in high school.
4. Things that make a city interesting are scenery, the people, attractions, and food. These all make interesting cities because that's what people look at when they try and find a place to visit.
DeleteMy top 5 cities in the U.S. are:
1. Pittsburgh,PA
2. New Orleans,LA
3. Los Angeles, Ca
4.New York, NY
5. Denver, CO
The number of steps for me to walk from Missouri to California is 11,520,000 steps if I was a 49er.
ReplyDelete#4. I think that the things the make a city interesting are the attractions of the city. My top favorite city would be Paris, France because of the Eiffel Tower. The second one is the city of Las Vagas, Nevada because I here it is really cool. The third one is Las Angleos, California because I think that is where the game show The Price is Right is at and I want to be on the show.
Delete#6. Things I would bring to California are:
Delete-Food
-Clothes
-Water
-Hair Brush
-Tooth Brush
-Extra Shoes
-Socks
-Personal Needs
-Coat
I would have to take 6,670,000 steps to walk from Missouri to California.
ReplyDelete#1- Total steps to California: 4,694,000.
ReplyDelete#6- The things I would bring to California for my journey would be:
-Clothes
-Food
-Water
-Tooth brush
-Hair brush
-Hair ties
-Sweatshirt
-Coat
-Extra pair of shoes
-Socks
-Personal needs
#8-
Delete#8- I would take a portable radio with reception all the time and all radio stations. I would bring this because listening to music when I walk helps me concentrate.
Delete#1: Total steps to California from Missouri is 6,336.000
ReplyDelete#6: A list of supplies that I would take to the wilderness would be
Delete-Clothes
-Coat
-Personal Needs
-Socks
-Hair Brush
-Tooth Brush
-Shoes
-Coat
-Light Jacket
-Food
-Water
-Hair supplies(Head Bands, Hair Ties)
#8: If I was to travel back in time and become a 49er, the one modern invention I would bring along would be an updated mini map because it has a mini compass on it so if I ever get lost or I want to go somewhere, I would know where I was and where I would be going.
#1: What makes a city interesting to me is when a city has big attractions such as Disney Land, or huge shopping centers because these are places where you can do many things. You can hang out with friends, or you could just relax and enjoy a nice day by yourself. For me I think that New York City would be a interesting town because you can get high end clothing, food, and experience. Another town where I think that would be interesting would be San Francisco because of all the different cultures and different ways of life. My third city most interesting city would be
ReplyDeleteMy third most interesting city would have to be Nashville, Tennessee beause of all the great food, urban culture, and beautifull views. (Actually #4)
Delete#8: If I could take one modern day item it would be a updated map beause it would help me to find my way to California. I would also use the map to help me find where I was going if I couldn't strike gold in one area so that I could find gold in a different area. You could also use a map for directions if you were to get lost some place.
#9: I believe that as americans we tend to buy new stuff when it is newly released so the price will become higher because there will be a higher supply. You can use movies or toys as examples. If a new release movie has come out then there will be more interested customers so the price will rise, as the item gets older the price will decrease because there won't be anymore interested buyers at that point. One supply that will rise and fall in price due to demand and need by people would be gas. Gas prices vary when the demand growth from americans have risen.
Based on experience here are things that I think make a city interesting. The first thing is when there are many different cultures and interest. When you can eat at a Thai restaurant, turn a corner and be at an anime store. Another thing that makes an interesting city is when there is a lot of scenery and events. I think community events are really fun, especially when there is live music. I also like when there is lots of art displayed around a city: wall art, statues, colorful and strange/ unique architecture. The last thing is when there are a lot of entertainment in a city: plays, operas, concerts, ballets, a circus, sports, etc.
ReplyDeleteHere are the cities that i find most interesting and why:
DeleteNew York: There are many cultures and customs, there is always something going on (live events), and finally i like how colorful and diverse the city itself is.
Ames: The reason is like Ames is the campus, there are a lot of cool buildings and resturaunts on the campus.
Marion: (this one is a bit bias) Because of all the local events: Marion by moonlight, chocolate walk, Christmas in the park etc.
These are the cities I find interesting
Here are the things i would take with me on my three month trip:
Delete20 pounds of smoked deer
30 gallons of water
one wagon
2 oxen
8 shirts
8 pears of pants
8 pears of underwear
3 pears of shoes
one pear of leather gloves
coat
2 hats
2 meat goats
1 milk goat
flint and steel
2 skillets
forks and knives
plates
bowls
cups
24 candles
4 boxes of matches
wood
ingredients for bread
pancake mix
machete
towels
soap
whiskey
hammer
nails
If I could take one thing that is considered modern technology with me i would take a battery powered radio. The reason being, i couldn't make one week without music let alone three months. With a battery powered radio i wouldn't need to charge it, and it would be easily portable.
DeleteIt would take me 3796.875 steps to get from Missouri to California.
ReplyDeleteIf I was a 49er that was going to travel from Missouri to California I would bring along a cart, food, water, firewood, and livestock. I would bring a cart to place the food and the water as well as the firewood so they would not have to be carried. I would bring firewood so if it was cold I could start a fire.
I would bring livestock so that they would not need to ride in the cart and when they would die they could be used as food. That is what I would bring if I was a teen 49er going to the gold rush.
DeleteI went 4 hours without electricity last night. I read a book and did my homework in my room until it was time for my sisters birthday party to commence. During the party we used candles to see what the was going on around us. After the party I went to the basement to clean it. When I finished cleaning the 4 hours was up. I think this shows how it was like to live when the California Gold Rush was starting. That is what I did when I was going 4 hours without electricity.
It would take 7,920,000 to walk to California from Missouri.
ReplyDeleteI went 4 hours without using any modern conveniences. All I did was do my science homework for awhile and then I just read a book for the rest of the time it was pretty easy.
DeleteIt was a fun little project. But if I didnt come up with anything they would of been the longest hours of my life. But was hard because I had to give up my fridge, oven, radio, xbox, tv, lights.
DeleteI would bring a multi-task knife. So I cut wood for fire. And I could be able to sharpen wood. And if I needed to I could unscrew. I could open bottles easily. And to defend myself.
Delete1.It would take me 4,087,742 steps to walk from Missouri to California.
ReplyDelete6. If I was a 49er I would bring one-hundred gallones of water, two crates of food, fire starters, ax, two shovels, twenty gold pans [to sell some on the way], a rifle and amo, jacket, four pants, shorts and shirts, one pair of boots and shoes, some money, hunting knife, two mules to pull the wagon, tent, sleeping bag,and a pocket watch.
Delete8. If I traveled back in time as a 49er and I could bring one thing it would be my knowledge. I chose that because I could bring more efficient was to get the gold out of the ground so we can get more money from the increase in gold production or the homes the right size for the right family. Also the storage of everything needs to and should be organized so a blind person could get a shovel out of the shed without help. But the thing I would take with me would be a pocket watch so we can stay on time and be on scheduled. That is what I would do and bring if I went back in time to be a 49er.
Delete1. It would take me 3,291,428 steps to walk to California from Missouri.
ReplyDelete6. If I was a 49er I would bring 115 gallons of water, 30 lbs of bacon, 15 lbs of wood, 5 lbs of cheese, 10 lbs of bread, 100 potatoes, 45 carrots, a tent, a ax, a knife, 25 fire starters, one rifle, one pistol, 100 gold pans (some for selling), 100 shovels (some for selling), 100 rifle bullets, 100 pistol bullets, 100 pairs of cloths, 15 wagons, 75 lbs of beef, 28 spices, boots, shoes, money, 10 lbs of cloth, cooking supplies, a calender, a watch, a bag, 55 mules, and a sleeping bag.
Delete8. I would bring a multi-tool pocket knife. You could use the knife and saw for hunting cutting rope or other small objects. The screw drivers could be used for building things even if it is not for its original purpose. The corkscrew could be used to drill small holes or take apart an object. I have one with a hatchet on it that could be used for cutting larger wood, a flashlight for seeing in the dark, and a pair of pliers to rip something apart or get a better hold of something. There is usually a fish cutter that could help with cleaning fish. There is sometimes a toothpick and some tweezers which could come in handy. That is the reason why I picked a multi-tool pocket knife for the item I would bring.
DeleteIf I were a 49er walking from Missouri to California, it would take me 3,620,571.42 steps
ReplyDelete8.) If I were to go back into time to become a 49er and bring one modern invention with me. What I would bring is something that is super important to me given to me by a family member that has past or important to me.
Delete6.) If I were to walk 2,000 miles to go find gold and I was a teenager I would bring a lot of water. I would bring as much water that could fit in my bag and I would also bring as much food as possible and only take a few bites a day. So the food will not go out and same with the water only take a few drinks I would also bring some cloths and Weapon with me to protect myself. I would also bring some shoes to so if my old ones break I would have some new ones.
DeleteIf I were a 49er walking to California from Missouri, it would take me 5,509,565 steps to reach California
ReplyDeleteIf I were to go back in time and become a 49er I would bring with me something that would work and last, perhaps a silenced pistol with an extended clip to help with hunting.
DeleteLast night I went without electricity for 4 hours. From 3:00 I went in my room and turned off the lights and started reading, the sun shining through the window provided me with enough light. When the sun set I got out some candles and continued reading until around 7:00 or 8:00

ReplyDelete2. To get to Sacramento you would have to take highway 30 to Interstate 380. Then you would get off at exit 13 on to Wright Brothers BLVD SW till you got to the Eastern Iowa Airport. Then you could take a plane to the Tahoe International Airport in Reno. Next you would have to rent a car and take highway 80 all the way to Sacramento.
Delete8. If I were to go back to 1849 I would bring a map showing where all of the rivers are. This is because they found a lot of the gold in streams and rivers and if you know where they are you'll probably be the first one there.
DeleteIt would tack 6,669,473.7 steps to walk from Missouri to California.
ReplyDelete7. I would have to give up my computer/laptop, T.V., x box 360, ps3, ps4, ps2, I pod, 3Ds, electrical lights, microwave, oven, washer and dryer, and my phone.
DeleteI had to give up all my electric devices for a evening and it was pretty had. After I finished all my homework I had nothing to do. So I read a book and talked to my brothers and family. The hardiest part was when my brother wanted me to play on the ps4 all the time but I resisted, also at dinner I had to eat in my room and it was boring. So after having to do this now I know how it was for the 49ers
Delete6. These are some supplies that I would need for 3 months to travel to California.
Delete5 pairs of shirts, pants, and shoes
175 gallons of water

bread making supplies
It would take me 9,747,692 steps to walk to California from Missouri.
ReplyDelete4. I think that what makes a city interesting is having a lot of attractions and activities. I think that Chicago is interesting because of the diversity amoung the buildings. There was also a sheer amount of things to do there. Another city is Italy because of how the city is on water. Finally, I thought that Cancun, Mexico was fun when I went there in vacation because of the good weather and all the activities.
Delete8. If I could go back in time and bring one modern convenience, I would want to bring a more up to date map with the easier passages on it, so I could make the trip as fast and as painless as possible.

4. Things that make a city interesting first, the people. The people of of city are representing their city, showing you if their culture is a certain way, they do something we wouldnt usually do, and may teach you a thing or two about life. Second, the places and buildings. These things make a city exciting to see, when you get to see a one of a kind place you may never see again. And last is the cities history. The place your in could be something very rare, like you could be standing on the ground that president JFK walked on himself, or be slave plantation that you never would of been at.

#2 If I were to fly from Cedar Rapids to Sacramento CA it would take me 5 hrs and 30 min total to get there. I would first fly to the DEN Denver, CO airport on a flight that will take 2 hrs and 16min. After a wait of 32 min. my next flight from DEN Denver, CO to Sacramento CA will take 2 hrs and 42min. So that comes to 5 hrs and 30 min. total to get from Cedar Rapids to Sacramento CA.

Delete#9 Gas prices have gone up because the demand is high for gas and the supplies has dwindled since the past. The price of water in South West has gone up because there isn't enough water for Las Vegas, all of California, and Colorado in the Colorado River. A few years ago when there was an abundant supply of cabbage patch kids the price of them went down as the demand dwindled.

5. If the Gold Rush didn't happen then I think that the state of California wouldn't be as popular as it is today. Sure it would still be somewhat popular because of its location and how people love to be on the beach. Life would be different for everyone because things that we get from California wouldn't be as abundant because people flocked to California during the gold rush making it a very popular state like it is today. I bet California would not be a very popular state. I would still have liked to live there though because it isn't freezing out like a place named Iowa.

I think that the hype is bad because there going to make and maybe some people will get angry at what there doing.
Delete#4 What makes a city so interesting is the tall buildings, history the view from the tall buildings, the nice shops and the way the cites look at night. Some other things that make cities interesting the nice people, restaurants that have different kinds of food. ReplyDeleteIf I were to go back in time and become a 49er, I would want to bring an updated map of the United Sates with me, or an updated map of the specific state I was traveling to with me. I would want to bring an updated map with me because- One: It could help me find new mines that has not been visited yet. Two- The map could help me find a route to a new civilization. And three- In case my group and I got lost, I could find the way back to our "home."
QUESTION 1:
DeleteIt would take me a total of 12,672,000 steps to reach California from Missouri.
QUESTION 9:
DeleteWhen I think of items that are more expensive because they are in a high demand, I think of the price of gas or propane. I say gas because thousands of people throughout the United States have to use gas in order to get from place to place. In order to go to work, shops, or school they need gas in their car in order to go to the specific place. The business that is giving out the gas has to spend money in order to supply the gas, and since the gas is increasing in price, the business has to make money and that is why the price of gas is increasingly high. Secondly I say propane because people use propane in their homes in order to stay warm and avoid the harsh winters that have came our way.
In addition the price of propane is really high because, 1: People need propane in order to heat their homes and 2: because the company needs to make money on their purchase of the propane from another company so they may have increased the price of the propane a little bit.
What are some modern events that are ‘hyped’? How do promoters create ‘hype’?
ReplyDeleteToday, in my opinion, many events are considered ‘hyped’. There are celebrities, movies, books, songs, and more that I think are promoted a little more than they should be. Some celebrities get more attention than they really need because they did one big thing. For example, Justin Bieber has been extremely famous in the past for having good music, donating to charities, and more. But, now he is still famous even though he told a reporter he was “retiring” from making music; yet he still gets on the news and into magazines. I also think that some celebrities are famous for no reason at all. The Kardashians have a reality show, a clothing line, and get a lot of publicity even though none of them had a reason to become famous in the first place.
Promoters can create ‘hype’ very easily. All you would need to do is say something on tv, the radio, in a magazine, etc. and word will get out very quickly. Movies, books, electronics, celebrities, new music, and more is talked about a lot today, and most people will believe what they read/hear/see. When there’s a new story about any of these things, people automatically want to know about it. I don’t think this idea is a bad thing, unless the ‘hype’ is false or promoting something bad. Overall, it can be very easy to create good or bad ‘hype’ today.
2. If I were to walk from Marion, IA, to Sacramento, CA, I would probably take an airplane. I would start by driving to Chicago from my house in Marion, IA. That is about a 3.5-4 hour drive. Then, from Chicago, I would go to the O’Hare Airport and get a flight to Sacramento, CA. That flight would take about 3.5 hours. Overall, my trip would take 7-7.5 hours.

My top three cities in the world is Washington DC, Paris, and Dublin Ireland.
I would go to Washington DC because there are a lot of historical monuments that are in Washington DC. Also a lot of historical events important to our nation occurred in Washington DC. I chose Paris as one of my top cities because it would be really cool to see and touch the Eiffel Tower, it would also be cool to be in Paris because it is very pretty. I chose Dublin as one of my top cities because it is the capital of the most beautiful country. Also one of my favorite movies takes place in Dublin and it would be really awesome to be somewhere that was in my favorite movie.

I think a city should have this because it excites people into learning about the place or just seeing what the city has to offer. My top three interesting cities are Paris, Venice and Rio. These are interesting to me because they have some kind of monument or special thing about them.
9. A thing that is getting expensive because they're in short supply is gas, because gas is running out. Diamonds are hard to find so they are expensive also. Somethings that are inexpensive due to large supply are paper, pencil and other supplies that we use for every day needs. Some things that have prices that skyrocketed due to high demand are apple products, clothing like under armour and other goods that we would like to have. Things tend to get more expensive when more people want them.

9. Gas prices have gone up in cents about every week. We all need gas and everyone uses it so maybe the gas company is running short and there was no there choice but to rise prices. The prices on shoes have gone up because the shoes company may not have anymore ideas at that moment and the prices rise to 100 to 185 dollars.
Delete2.A whole evening with no modern conventions was pretty cool. I didn’t get to text anyone. Which I needed because I am always on my phone. I didn’t watch tv . Then I did that things to keep me busy. I stare at the stars outside. Also I cleaned my room it was kind of hard though because I had nothing but candles and not that many.
1) For me to walk from Missouri to California, it would take me 4,088,000 steps.
ReplyDelete4) Yes, San Francisco definitely was a popular place back then. In my opinion I would say the history of a city is what draws people to its location. I think history is what made San Francisco such a popular place in todays age. Back then it was gold. Of course though, they were living the present and San Francisco was popular because of the gold. One city, even though I have never been there, would be Bethlehem. Mainly because that is where Jesus was born. Seriously, there is a ton of history. Jesus is history! The second place I would choose would be Rome. I would pick that place mainly because of the history. I wish I could see the colosseum and be able to examine the structures that were created by great architectures. The third place place I would visit would be England. I would do that because of I am fascinated by castles. I find the medieval era interesting. Ya, they had several illnesses that caused them to not last long, but still, I think their way of living was neat.
5) If California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico never joined the U.S., life for sure would be different for a lot of people. There is a lot of history that has happened in those states. There are the cities such as Los Vegas, Hollywood and other places that are part of the reason why we attract so many places. A lot of Americans and for that matter, a lot of people in the world that would be devastated to hear that they would not get some of their favorite movies because Hollywood would not be around. To think that all these states would be owned by Mexico could be a terrible blow to us. We would most likely be a constant battle trying to claim the land. In the end, I am glad we have those states and I am sure the people there are glad they belong to us.
8.) If I were to travel back in time to the 49er gold rush era (1840’s) and take 1 modern technological device with me I would probably take an iphone 5s. The reason I would take this with me is because then I would be able to play games and listen to music with me when we were looking for gold. Now if the device started to die what I would do is that the newer iphone would have a solar panel and what would happen is when you would turn the iphone off it would automatically charge from the sun. Or the newer iphone would have a gold inserter that would charge the phone when you put a 1.o oz of gold in the iphone. Now since there is no cell phone wires to get wi-fi or a connection too, I would have a hotspot on my phone that would connect the internet to my phone. Now you may think that you still need a connection but I would have a futuristic connecter to this modern time right now that would connect me to the internet. This is why and how i would survive with a phone in the 1840 gold rush.
ReplyDelete1.) It would take 7454117.64706 miles for me to travel from California to Missouri.
4.) So what makes a city interesting is the memories. Even if you travel to a new city you may feel the memories that are hidden there. My top 3 interesting cities would have to be Marion, California, and Florida. The reason I choose these cities because they have sad memories and good memories. This is why it is really hard to leave a city even if you wanna run away and start over you will always remember the most important memories of that city. That is why you must live life to your fullest even if you have been in a city for 13 years its the city you will most remember not that it was one of the boring cities. This is what makes cities interesting.

What makes a city interesting to me is having something different about the city. Also having a beautiful scenery is something unique about the city. My top three cities I would like to visit are Italy, Egypt, and Israel. They all have a beautiful scenery and have something different than other cities. They all have an interesting history as well.
Activity #6
I would take a wagon packed with food and drinks for the entire trip, books to keep me busy, money for when I would get there, candles, deck of cards, paper and pencil, clothes, and personal items.
6). The things I would need to bring on my journey is:
ReplyDelete- hairbrush

- toothpaste
- hair-ties

4) What makes a city interesting to me is the people, how they speak, eat, act, and dress always catch my attention, If I could go anywhere it would be Boston, because everyone there has a different accent that I think is very interesting to listen to. I love hearing every ones unique voices, dialects, tones, and how they express themselves.
ReplyDeleteI would also want to visit Alabama, because Alabama is a southern state, I would love to go and experience all of the home cooked food and have large breakfasts and dinners all with family.Living on a large farm for me would be awesome, I would want lots of animals. Also Alabama has a lot of history to it, I would love to learn about the history behind Alabama.
The last place I would go is New York. Because New York was one of the first 13 colonies it has a lot of history, but the people there today don't appreciate it. If I lived in New York I would become a history teacher so that I could make the younger generations understand how amazing New York really is.
5) Life would be different because in todays economy we battle illegal persons coming into the Untited States and bringing drugs and other bad things into our country. I think that it would be even harder if we didn't win California because we would not have enough American forces protecting the boarder between Mexico
Deleteand the US.
9)Gas is something that is over priced today because it is running low and since it is being used everyday by Americans it has no time to create more. Someday I think the oil will run out just like the gold.

ReplyDelete3. The movie R.I.P.D was way to much hype. Everybody talked about how it was original, and everything was great about it. It was original, great idea for a movie, but the way they portraded it was very bad. It could have honestly been a PG movie, because the way they wrote it seemed like a child's movie. The CGI was also pretty lousy compared to all the other movies that were out at the time.
8. If I traveled back in time with an item that fit in my pocket, it would be $10,000. Items cost less back in earlier stages so that much money would be worth so much more, even though it's only ten thousand dollars. I could buy all the best supplies for travel, and mining. The only problem would be that many people would try to kill me, because I'm now rich. Since I'm rich though I would get a posey who would protect me. We be all like, "What, what you gonna do? Huh, come at me bro!".

1. The length of my foot step is 24 inches. 63,360 divided by 24 equals 2,640. 2,640 times 2,000 equals 5,280,000. It would take me 5,280,000 steps to get to Sacramento, California from Missouri.
If I were going to travel on a trail to Sacramento. I would pack food that would not rot fast and enough to last me the three months or at least enough to keep me alive. I would also take a a pan or something to cook with and an ax to get wood for a fire. I would also take a bottle to get water I would have a couple of them just in case. I would take flint and steel to start a fire. I would take a gun, a hunting knife and ammo.
ReplyDeleteIf the gold rush had never happened. California, New Mexico, and Arizona would have belonged to Mexico. If this had happened it would probably have changed life by the US probably wouldn't have gotten Hawaii or Alaska. I Would not be changed by this happening though unless Mexico didn't allow Americans in to the New Mexico territory and then I wouldn't have ever meet my step grandparents. If we didn't have the New Mexico territory we would only be 2/3 of what our country.
If I traveled back in time to the gold rush. I would take a map of the United States. I would take it because it would help me get from Iowa to California. I would also want the map to be new so that I could find the fastest route. I disadvantage of taking a new map would be that it would have modern things on it like towns or cities that might not exist yet.
2- You walk out to your car from VMS, start the engine and crank the music. You then head west on 4th Ave. You then take the first right onto 12th street. Next you turn left onto 6th Ave. Then you turn Right onto 10th Street and hang a left onto 7th Ave. Then you turn right onto 8th Street NE and take the on ramp onto I-380 and merge into traffic. You stay on I-380 until I-80 west to Des Monies. Its a breeze from here, you stay on interstate 80 until you get to Sacramento. But you may need to stop and get some gas and food. I would recommend stopping very little in Nebraska because it is very boring. If you're lucky and don’t break down, and hit good traffic, you may get there in 27 hours.
ReplyDelete6- Planning my trip as a 49er, I would bring many things. First I would bring a hiking backpack and hiking poles. If I planned my trip during the winter, I would bring skis and snowshoes. Secondly I would bring fire starting tools. You never know when you may need to warm up or cook your food. Lastly I would bring a nice knife and a bow and arrow. A nice knife would be useful for skinning your meat if you need to. A bow would help if you need to kill an animal to eat and you could reuse some of your arrows.
8- One modern invention I would bring as I traveled back to become a 49er, is a gopro. I would bring a gopro so I could film my adventure. Gopros are very durable and probably wouldn't break. They also have fairly good battery life. I would also have a crank charger with it and a high capacity micro SD card. After my video, people would know what the trip would look like and maybe have more respect for the 49ers.
This is my route to Sacramento.

To go 4 hours without modern technology was hard, but I survived. What I did was I put a lot of candles in my room and grabbed a couple of books and read.
DeleteSome items that cost more today are coal, gas, and fossil fuel.
DeleteSome items that cost less are pencils, pens, and paper.
What i couldnt use for my 4 hours were a car, Ipad, computer, lighting, stove, oven, fridge, frezer, tv, digital clock, and wifi.
DeleteSome things that are inexpensive because of large supply are corn, peas, grapes, any fruit.
DeleteSome things thatmore expensive because of lower supply is helium, gemstones, goild, silver, lead.
1) It would take me about 5392340.426 steps to reach California.
ReplyDelete7) Yesterday, I went without my cell phone, TV (like I watch much TV anyway), light from electricity, internet, basicly I just stayed in my room the whole evening. Some of the stuff I did, I had watched out the window at the cars passing by, wrote some short stories, did some drawing, homework. It was very relaxing, and pretty normal for me, just colder in my room.
8) One thing I would take if I traveled back in time is my phone. With my phone I could access a GPS to show me the way. I would also use my phone to tell me the time, calendar, calculator, alarm clock, etc. And if there WAS reception, I'd probably call people in the future like "Haha! Suckers! I'm in the 1800's getting GOLD! Take that, Mom!" But I realize that couldn't happen... time logic and such. So that's what I'd use it for, different tools on the phone.
The list of things I would bring

1. To walk to California from Missouri it would take me 4,525,714.29 steps.
ReplyDelete6. The stuff I would take to California is a gun to survive if a wild animal tried to attack me and to get meat to eat something. And then flour for making breads, drinking water so I would get sick. Then clothes so I could change out of the clothes, and bring blankets so in case of stranded in the winter of something went wrong. And to keep me healthy also help the other people traveling to California.
8. The on modern thing that I would bring alone would be a smartphone because so in case of I got loss I could call for help. And then because of mapping where I would go. So in case of a person that cause a conflict I could call in backup. Then also you could keep in touch with other 49ers that are already there at California. And check the prices of gold to know if i should sell at that time.
1. It would take me 4,525,800 steps to get to California from Missouri.
ReplyDelete4. There are many things that make cities interesting. One thing that makes a city interesting, and probably the biggest why, is the people that live there. If you take San Francisco for instance, the gold rush brought many different cultures into one place and San Francisco is now a major city. Another thing that makes a city interesting is the history that the city has had. Another interesting thing is the sights and landmarks there are. These things plus many more have made some of the most interesting cities in the world. To me, the three most interesting cities are London, Rome, and Paris, not only because these are major cities but because of their rich history, culture, and landmarks.
5. If the gold rush had never have happened and the U.S. didn’t have the states of California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada, our lives would be very different. For life in America, in the modern times, California is a bustling metropolis that has some of the most famous people, films, and weather. If we had never acquired California, for instance, because the gold rush never happened, the modern city of Hollywood, which is the home of the movies and its famous actors, would not be in California. Therefore, a new “Hollywood” would be somewhere else and not where it is now.

6. Many of the 49ers were teenagers who left home on a 2,000 mile journey to California. Some walked the entire distance on foot! If you were planning to journey 2,000 miles across the wilderness, what would you take along? Remember, there are no supply points along the way; you must pack everything you need to last 3 months. Make a list of your supplies.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to make a trip to California, I would take along these supplies for my three month trip:
-Food
Non-perishable items, like canned food, or bread that is possibly unleavened, I would bring enough food to last a good month.
-Bow and arrow
If the food supplies run out or run low, I would use my bow and arrow and hunt for food
-Clothing
I would bring more clothes than I need, just to be absolutely certain that I have enough for the trip
-Water
I would bring more than enough water. If I run out of water, I would look for any sign of water, I would taste a little bit of the water to be sure that it is fresh and not salt water.
-Any other necessities, such as a wagon or a car, but bringing gas and extra tools for the machinery work. If i brought a wagon, I would bring along horses or cattle or any animal that is good for travel.
2. Before they left for California, the 49ers plotted their route west. With a modern map, plot YOUR route to Sacramento. Try to find the fastest route.
The journey from Marion Iowa to Sacramento California is 1,845 mi, which is 27 hours by car, I would begin my trip by heading north on 12th street toward 7th Avenue, then I would take the 1st left onto 7th Avenue. I would then continue onto Marion Boulevard, and then continue onto 1st Avenue, north east. I would turn onto 8th Street. Then I would take the ramp to I-380. Then make an exit onto I-80 west, and continue my journey on I-80 until I reach California. Then continue along the road until I get to the Sacramento exit.
5. If the gold rush had never happened, the states of California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico might have ended up as a part of in Mexico--instead of the U.S. How would life in America be different? How would your life be different?
If the gold rush never happened and Mexico had taken California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, life in America wouldn’t be the same as what it is today. Mexico would be bigger, and America would be smaller. If Mexico had the four states, what’s there to stop them from trying to take over the rest of America. America could’ve been handed over to Mexico, because America’s army was getting smaller and Mexico’s army is getting bigger.
1 The Fastest way from Marion to Sacramento by car is...
ReplyDelete2 Get on I-380 S/IA S in Cedar Rapids from 1st Ave NE
3 Head north on 12th St toward 7th Ave
4 Take the 1st left onto 7th Ave

6 Continue onto 1st Ave NE
7 Turn right onto 8th St NE

10 Merge onto I-380 S/IA-27 S
11 Take exit 0B to merge onto I-80 W toward Des Moines
12 Take the exit to stay on I-80 W toward Council Bluffs/Omaha
13 Keep right to stay on I-80 W, follow signs for Reno/S.L. International Airport
14 Take the exit onto I-80BUS W/Capital City Freeway toward Watt Ave/Sacramento/CA-99 S/Capital City Freeway
15 Take the California 160 exit toward Downtown/Sacramento

17 Turn left onto N Sacramento Fwy

DeleteIt would take me 3520000 steps from Iowa to California.
ReplyDeleteIf I traveled back in time, the one item I would take would be my cell phone so that I can play games along the way or use a GPS so that you wouldn't get lost. I wouldn't use it very much because the battery would die off right away, so I could probably just use it for a minute at a time once or twice a day, and once it got under 50%, then I would use it every three to four days.
