Virtual Voyager #8 - News Story v. Feature Story

Before winter break, all 7th graders participated in Newspapers in Education learning about newspaper format, news stories, feature stories, editorials, photojournalism, sports and entertainment, and classifieds.  (You can review your work in your interactive notebooks.  See your Q2 "Table of Contents" and "December" entries.)
Your VV #8 task involves your country and current events.  Using one of the news websites, search for your country and select a recent story that made the news.
First, READ THE STORY.  As you read think about:
1.  a.  WHO it is about.
     b.  WHAT it is about.
     c. WHERE (relative and absolute) it is taking place.
     d.  WHEN (date, time, season, day, night, etc.) it is taking place.
     e. WHY it is being reported.
     f.  HOW it has affected those involved.

2.  a.  Is this a news story or feature story?  Explain.
     b.  Copy and paste the website (for future reference)

HINT:  Dictionary.com defines a news story as a news report of any length, usually presented in a straightforward style and without editorial comment.  A feature story is a newspaper or magazine article or report of a person, event, an aspect of a major event often having a personal slant and written in an individual style.

Example - Argentina Cunard cruise ship threatened after flying British flag in Bueros Aires
1. a.  WHO: Captain of the Queen Victoria, British Foreign Office, Carnival UK, and Argentine government
b.  WHATThe ship had been threatened with a very punitive fine – about 10,000 US dollars – if the captain didn't take down it's red ensign flag while in Argentine waters.
c.  WHERE:  Cape Horn, Falkland Islands, and Buenos Aires
d.  WHEN:  Thursday, February 13, 2014
e.  WHY:  The United Kingdom and Buenos Aires continue to fight over the possession of the Falkland Islands.  Buenos Aires maintains its rule over the islands and the oil reserves there.  The island inhabitants want to remain under UK's protection.
f.  HOW:  The British Foreign Office views this as another example of unacceptable harassment and intimidation by Argentina.

2.  a.  This is a news story because it is presented in a straightforward style and without editorial
          comment.
     b.  http://www.theguardian.com/global/2014/feb/13/cunard-cruise-ship-british-flag-buenos-aires-argentina

  1. a.WHO: Korean Families Separated by the Korean War
    b. WHAT: Korean family reunion between North/South Korea
c.WHERE: A mountain resort located in North Korea
    d:WHEN: Thursday February 20, 2014
e.WHY: The Korean War Separated families who have not seen each other for 60 years or even had communication.
    f.HOW

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/20/world/asia/koreas-reunion/index.html?iref=allsearch

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. f. HOW: They really haven't seen there families in 60 years so to see there family one last time or maybe the first time some remember if they were really little would be great. I think it made them happy even though they may never see each other again.

I think this is a feature story because it doesn't affect everyone and it is an event that is kind of personal and affects most of North Korea and South Korea.

      2. What: They met together to discuss and confront the world about global warming, and the drastic climate change that has been sneaking up on us. They say we have to act on it, for it will never change or get better on its own. They also said that the Arctic is majorly changed by all of our usage of gas and other chemicals that create global warming.
      3. Where: Ilulissat, Greenland
      4. When: March 25th, 2014
      5. Why: Both of the high ranked people believe we should try to make the world right again because on the track that we're on it won't end happily. They want to help make people recognize what we're doing to the earth and try to stop it.

      2. I believe that it is a feature story because it only talks about how we need to change global warming not how this story or what has happened after these confrontations was acted upon. Sometimes powerful, respectful, and inspirational speeches aren't effective after it is said and that's what happens sometimes, mostly when dealing with global warming so I think its a feature story.

  49. Who: the six men and one woman of a rebel group based in Sri Lanka called "Tamil Tiger"
What: India's Supreme Court has suspended the release of three people who were involved in the 1991 assassination of Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandi, a retaliation for sending Indian peacekeepers to Sri Lanka in 1987, during the civil war. The other four involved are serving life sentences. The three people whose releases were suspended have been jailed for 20 years and on death row since 1998.
    Where: India and Sri Lanka
Why: The murder was very sudden, and many people have been expecting the releases, so when the Court decided to take a few days to keep on deciding their pleas for mercy, it had to be big news.
How: People who've been anticipating the releases, whether out of anxiety or spite, now have to predict when the Court really IS going to release them, if they even decide to. The government of Sri Lanka will direct their attention back to Tamil Tiger, if it's not there already.

I think this is a news story because this kind of news can't be reported five months from now, for example; the assassination was a big deal, and if the people involved were going to be released, you'd think people would want to know right away.
